Lens Materials

The material of the lens is also important in ensuring comfort, durability and long-term effectiveness for your new glasses. New technology has allowed for the development of more advanced lens materials that provide more comfortable, sturdy and attractive eyeglasses, especially for patients who require stronger vision correction.

In the past, these patients may have been limited in their selections and unable to wear some of the most stylish frames because of the need for thicker lenses. Today’s wide range of lens materials no longer limits these options for patients with higher prescriptions so that everyone can take advantage of cosmetically-appealing yet highly effective eyeglasses. Certain coatings may also be applied to the lens to help reduce scratches, glare, fog and UV rays in order to further protect your eyes and your glasses.

At the Legarreta Eye Center Optical Shop, we offer our patients many different lens materials, including:

Polycarbonate – Thinner and lighter than plastic lenses, polycarbonates are the ideal in safety and comfort. They offer full UV protection and can withstand more impact than plastic or glass lenses as well. They can also be used for sunglasses and sports eyewear.

Plastic – Plastic lenses remain the standard in today’s eyeglasses, as they provide clear vision, comfort, safety and long-term wear. Patients who choose plastic lenses will have the largest selection of frames and can easily tint and coat their lenses, although plastic is quickly becoming an outdated lens choice.

Hi-Index – Hi-index lenses refract light in a different way using less material than plastic lenses for a thinner product that produces more effective vision correction. It is often more comfortable and cosmetically-pleasing for patients with higher prescriptions.

Mid Index – Although not as thin as hi-index lenses, mid index materials are considered safer and more effective than plastic or glass lenses, and provide strong UV protection without the need for extra coating.

Trivex – Similar to polycarbonate, Trivex lenses produce clearer vision because of its higher-quality optics. It is also lighter yet more rigid, making it safer and more ideal for rimless frames, children’s lenses and sportswear.
